Hermes

Getting started

  1. Create an account with your email and a password, or with a one-time code sent to your email.
  2. Hermes shows Creating your Hermes… while it sets up your private cloud instance. This takes about 30 seconds the first time.
  3. Say hello in Chat. Answers stream in live; tool steps like “Searching the web” appear as small pills. Press Stop (or Esc) at any time.
  4. Open Connections to link the services you use, then install the phone app and the computer node from Download.

Connections

Connections let Hermes act in your accounts. Every app shows the same Connections hub, and each card is one of: Not connected, Connecting, Connected as … or Needs attention.

  • Sign-in services (Google, Slack, GitHub, Spotify, Microsoft) open the provider’s own sign-in page in a popup.
  • Device codes (Codex): Hermes shows a short code. Press Copy & Open, paste it on the provider’s page, and the card turns green on its own.
  • Tokens (Claude Code): run claude setup-token and paste the token into the single field.
  • Secrets (Telegram bot token, Duffel key, site logins): a secure form saves them straight to your vault.

Once connected, Hermes refreshes tokens in the background and never asks twice. If something breaks, the card shows Needs attention with a one-tap Reconnect. A card marked Needs setup by admin is not available yet on this server.

Coding engines

Connect Claude Code, Codex or both. With only one connected, Hermes uses it. With both, Hermes asks you once which should be the default and remembers it (change it any time in Settings → Coding). Turn on Best of two to have both try and compare.

Devices

Every browser, phone and computer you sign in on gets its own device key. See them all in Devices; revoking one signs it out within seconds.

To add a computer, install the node and run hermes-node login. Enter the code it shows under Devices → Add a computer.

Approvals & payments

Hermes pauses before risky actions — sending messages as you, deleting, merging, and anything that costs money. Review mode in Settings decides how often it checks: always, only for actions, or never (payments always ask).

Payments use a mandate: a one-time approval for a specific merchant and amount, signed with your device key. Hermes cannot exceed it or your spend caps.

When Hermes needs a password or key, a secure request appears on every signed-in device. Fill it on whichever is handiest.

Sleep & wake

Your Hermes sleeps after about five idle hours and wakes in seconds when you come back — you will briefly see Waking Hermes…. Running tasks, schedules and open voice sessions keep it awake. Use Keep awake in Settings to pin it on for a while.

FAQ

Is Hermes the same on my phone and the web?

Yes. There is one Hermes per account, running in the cloud. Every app is a window onto the same conversations, memory and connections.

Can Hermes see my passwords?

No. When Hermes needs a password or API key it asks with a secure form. What you type goes straight to your encrypted vault and is filled in for you later; it never enters the chat or the AI model.

Will Hermes spend money without asking?

Never. Every payment needs your approval, signed by your device, and must fit inside the per-purchase and monthly caps you set in Settings.

What happens when I’m not using it?

After about five hours with nothing running, your Hermes sleeps to save energy. It wakes in a few seconds the next time you open an app, or on its own for a scheduled task.

Which AI model does Hermes use?

Hermes uses hosted frontier models through our model proxy. For coding you can plug in your own Claude Code or Codex account.

How do I delete my account?

During the beta, email support from the address you signed up with and we will delete your instance, vault and backups within 30 days.
